What is a Canyon?

Well to those that don't know the dictionary definition is a "Deep gorge or ravine with steep sides, cut through soft rock by a river".

However in the Blue Mountains they are not all deep, usually ranging between 2m and 50m. They are formed by small creeks which have cut narrow slots into the soft sandstone. These slots can be less than 1m wide in parts and may contain waterfalls, duckunders, long pools, ferns, tunnels, glow worms, yabby's and much more.

What does canyoning Involve?

I do this activity with a great group of people from the excellent club SPAN in Sydney. Well canyons require a variety of skills, the primary one being physical fitness. However, navigation, abseiling, swimming, jumping, team work, wading, climbing, and an appreciation of the environment all help to ensure a good time.
